Jasmina Cibic: The Pavilion

The exhibition by Jasmina Cibic at Apoteka is organized in the framework of year-long programming“This is not a Museum”, bringing together artistic positions that deal with issues of (re)presentation, exhibiting and institutions of art, by the works of artists that are re-working tensions between the space, the observer and the observed.
The project is curated by Branka Bencic.
Films and videos by Jasmina Cibic are constructed around the idea of architecture and discourse that it produces. The artist centres her exploration around the ways in which architecture can become an embodiment of national ideologies, identities and representations of power. Her work and creative process are linked to a place and a context. It is performative and it uses a wide array of mediums and stage techniques in order to redefine and reconsider the exitsing environment and its policy.
In her recent film The Pavillion (2015) the artist continues her interest in how the politics of representation is reflected in the shaping and building of desire tied to political power. Following her recognizable work method of re-contextualizing historical subjects the artist has built her film around a mirroring effect of two specific architectural objects designed in 1929 and 1927 respectively. These are the national pavilion of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia at the Barcelona EXPO, designed by the Serbian modernist architect Dragiša Brašovan, and the house for Josephine Baker, designed by Adolf Loos, which remained unrealized. Project premiered at MSUV Museum of Contemporary Art Vojvodina.
In the framework of Cinemaniac>Think Film project at Pula Film Festival, Jasmina Cibic took part in a double solo exhibition Forum, along with Assaf Gruber, at MMC Luka Pula (July 10 – 16).
